FAQs
Do I need a referral for a consultation?
No, a referral from your GP or specialist isn’t necessary but is strongly encouraged. A referral allows part of your consultation fee to be rebated from Medicare. Regular GP visits are recommended to help manage any other health issues and your general condition.
What should I expect during my first visit?
Your first consultation will involve discussing your concerns and a review of your medical history. A physical examination may be performed, and it’s encouraged you wear comfortable clothing. Depending on your condition, additional diagnostic tests such as a colonoscopy, imaging, or lab tests may be recommended. You will be provided with information about your diagnosis and treatment options. If you are choosing to proceed with surgery a surgical consent form will be completed.
How do I prepare for a colonoscopy?
Proper preparation is important for an effective colonoscopy. This typically involves following a special diet and taking a prescribed bowel preparation solution to cleanse your colon. Detailed instructions will be provided before your procedure.
Do I need to take bowel preparation for anal surgery?
In most cases, bowel preparation is not required for minor anal surgeries, such as haemorrhoid surgery or fistula repair. An enema may be required just prior to your procedure. Specific instructions will be provided before your surgery.
Are there non-surgical treatments available?
Yes, many colorectal conditions can be treated non-surgically. Depending on your diagnosis, options may include medications, dietary changes, physiotherapy, or minimally invasive procedures.
Is it possible to have an all female team for my procedure?
Yes, we understand that some patients may prefer to be treated by an all female team for their comfort and privacy. You can request an all female team alongside your female specialist colorectal surgeon, Dr Alicia Mackowski, for your endoscopy or surgical procedure. Please let us know your preference when scheduling your appointment or procedure.
